Pensions " I The U. S. Government is paying pay-ing compensation or pensions at the rate of $145,000,000 a month to 2,321,917 veterans of all wars and peacetime service and to 907,000 of their dependents, according ac-cording to the Veterans Administration. Admin-istration. The living veterans on the rolls include 88 from the Civil War. The others are: the Indian Wars, 849; Spanish-American War, 114,000; first World War, 436,000; World War II, 1,-728.000, 1,-728.000, and peace-time service, 43,000. Crime Crimes increased nearly 20 per cent in the first six months of 1947, compared with the same period of 1946, according to J. Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI. FDIC The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation has turned over to the Treasury checks totaling $146,695,250.41, thereby repaying repay-ing more than half the money provided it to start the program of insuring bank deposits in 1934.
