Show DISCARD AMBER TRAFFIC LIGHT Red and Green Alone Accomplish Ac-complish Desired Results. The amber traflic light, fj". increase safety of pedestrians and pre vent Intersection collisions, is fast be Ing forced into the discard. While trallic experts are still at odds as to the value of the amber IMit in combination with red and green lights, there Is a widespread movement to discard the "vvarumg or "get ready" signal because dme.s misinterpret its meaning. New York. Buffalo. Albany, and do ens of smaller cities throughout he country have adopted a system of red and trreen traffic lights, omitting the yellow light, and have reported u.eu succors Most 'cities still use the three-color lights, hut there is a widespread o-ference o-ference in the combinations used and the interpretation placed upon the center cen-ter light. The experts agree that if the yellow or amber light is used mainly as a warning of a change It should be discarded. dis-carded. There Is a tendency for traffic traf-fic to start while the yellow light Is showing, which Is undesirable. Many of the experts say that the red and green alone accomplish the desired result re-sult with less confusion. That there are wide differences In Interpretation of the araber light's meaning Is shown by a study just completed com-pleted by the American engineering council. Twenty-six cities using the three-color traflic signal interpret the amber as a caution signal ; 27 use it as a warning of change; 17 to clear the .intersection of traffic and 11 for pedestrian movement. Eighty-five cities are using the three-color signal system, of which 76 use the amber after red and green. Eight have recognized the undesira-bility undesira-bility of using It after the red, and consequently use It only after the green is flashed. Eighteen cities use the amber in combination with the red or green. The experts agree that use of the amber in combination with red, as is the custom in Washington and several sev-eral other large cities, should not be continued. The amber light In such cases is taken as a signal to start. Most of the men' who have studied the problem see some merit in the use of amber wilh the green light, because be-cause it should bring moving traffic to a halt In preparation for a change. The exponents of the two-color system, sys-tem, red and creen only, say that the desired result can be obtained without the amber fight Three cities have Inaugurated systems sys-tems of only red and green lights, but provide a period of darkness to clear the intersection for the change. Nine have overlapped the red aud green in ull directions. Working on the Information that persons who are to some extent colorblind color-blind constitute 5 per cent of the population, pop-ulation, the bureau of standards has selected colors which are disinguish-able disinguish-able to most if not all persons having defective color vision. |
