Show An Electrical Nation Cl According to an estimate by the United States Geological Survey, production pro-duction of electricity for public use in this country reached a total of 88 billion kilowatt hours in 1928, or an j amount equal to that of all the rest cf j the world combined. At the close of the year there were j about 23 million consumers of electricity, electri-city, of which 19 million were house- hold users, 62 per cent of the entire population now living in electrically-wired electrically-wired homes. The extension of electricity to 350,-000 350,-000 farms have been a striking development de-velopment of the last few years, and j this movement is proceeding with great rapidity. i The average price for household elec- I tricity throughout the country is now 18 per cent below pre-war levels. while generally living costs are 65 per cent above. Power from central gen- ; crating stations has replaced steam in ' industry, and the local installation of steam boilers and engines in factories ! has almost ceased. ! Electric plants and equipment now have a total value of approximately ten billion dollars, and the industry's securities are owned by more than 1,500,000 individuals, most of whom are customers of the companies whose stocks they hold. Truly the United States is an electrical elec-trical nation, and largely because of ;hat fact it leads in industry and business, busi-ness, which in turn is making possible i general standard of living superior to that of any other country in the world's history. |
