Show Added Wealth Comes to Utah Utah's 1930 commercial broiler-chicken broiler-chicken crop, now pouring onto markets from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast, wUl reach 1,500,000 pounds and bring $250,000 in new wealth to the farmers of the state. Over 125 freight cars will be necessary nec-essary to move the huge crop to market. Announcement that the Beehive state's production of "spring fries" this season would break all records f cr total volume and ' price, was made recently by Albertus Willard-son, Willard-son, assistant general manager of the Utah Poultry Producers' Cooperative Coop-erative Association. The previous peak, reached last year, was the exportation of 70 carloads of broilers broil-ers valued at about $150,000. Nearly 5,000 farmers, located from Richfield on the south to Preston, Idaho, on the north, will participate partici-pate in the returns from Utah's largest broiler production. . Last year, . for the first tiras, Utah's broilers were sent to eastern "markets as well as those in Cali- ' fornia and other western states. During the present season markets as far east as New York, as far west as the Pacific coast and in and arc-und Chicago will be reached by, the local shipments. Large poultry grading plants in the middle wei! a:e aisj making heavy bids for immense im-mense quantities of live fowls. Though only a few carloads oi the early broilers have moved to ; da:e v.-ith the balance scheduled for shhipment, between now and June 1, poultry experts are certain that p.ices ;xi" pound this year will be slightly lower than those of 19 and 20 cents paid a year ago. The demand is strongest this year for birds that are considerably heavier' than those shipped pie-vicurly, pie-vicurly, and with this in view the producers are urged to feed their flocks until they average between 1 Ys to 2 pounds per chicken, rather :n?.n snipping them at weights ol about i Vi pounds. During 1930 only about 200.000 p-unds cf the huge total production will be dressed locally before exo :rt to other states. The others will be cent alive. This relatively small picporticn will be increased, it is expected, by the addition of more feeding and dressing stations. Thus, aj the industry progresses, Utah will be able to take full advantage of the net returns from the broiler 1 meat, by shipping dressed and graded products. |
