Washington Advices tohe Italian embassy here on May 12 announced that thirteen Austrian sunmurines had been sunk in the Adriatic by Italian patrols during the previous week. . The same dispatches, giving no date, sav that for the fourth time in a year the Italian destroyers have penetrated the fortified port of Durazzo, sinking four transports loaded with provisions and ammunition. The destroyers returned unscratched. The increasing efficiency of the allies al-lies in submarine destruction was recognized rec-ognized in a speech by the Germun secretary sec-retary of the navy in the reichstag on May 10. Official accounts of the speech reaching here report the Ger man secretary as saying that while the submarine warfare had achieved far greater results than was expected, a certain number of submarines had been lost as the result of improved means of destruction devised by the allies. Both French and British statistics on submarine sinking during the last week show a certain improvement in the situation, says Marcel Hutin, a usually well informed writer on the subject. He adds: "I understand that our means of fighting submarines Is increasing daily, and without giving details I can say that the number of submarines put out of action in the last few days has risen in a very satisfactory manner." |
