Pays Sanpete $1167 Taxes Into the Sanpete treasury the (J.an Povver and L:ght Company i. .dnesday paid $1,167. in property pro-perty tax payments to defray the costs of government and aid in reducing tne burden on other anpete county taxpayers. iiie property tax payments this week to tne treasuries of the 17 counties in the state in which the power company operates will ie prorated among municipalities and school districts. Ivlr. G. L. Eilerbeck, division manager, explained the November ax payments on property only in Utah is about one-half of the company's annual tax bill, whicn in 1939 is estimated at more than ,000,000. The larger amount includes in-cludes federal income, federal 3 percent energy, federal social security se-curity taxes, state income and miscellaneous and payments to other states and suudivisions in which the company operates. The company's total taxes in 1939, it was explained, will take approximately 17 cents out of every dollar of the company's gross revenue and exceed the dividends paid to preferred stockholders, stock-holders, the only dividends paid by the company, by more than one million dollars. In commenting on the payment Mr. Eilerbeck said "it is not our intention nor has it been our custom cus-tom to complain of the burden of taxation. It is the duty of every company and individual to contribute con-tribute according to ability to pay to meet the costs of government. Many of the functions of our public bodies are urgently necessary neces-sary to meet the public and social obligations of the times, but somewhere some-where in the not remote future there is a limit as to the tax burden bur-den business can bear and still continue to furnish the type of service and at the low rates the public demands."
