Show Mines Sink Ships News from the war zone tells us of the sinking of a number of ships after striking a mine. This is a new development of the warfare war-fare because, during the first ten weeks of the war, such sinkings were almost unknown. Recently there has been evidence evi-dence that German submarines are laying mines near the British coast, in the shipping lanes. The evidence is the destruction of vessels, ves-sels, some of them flying neutral flags. We wonder if there is any connection con-nection between the new campaign cam-paign and the withdrawal of A-merican A-merican shipping from the war zones. Other neutral nations, who: lose .-'hips, are small and unable to make effective protests against 'such destruction, it is possible ithat Germany waited for the ! United States to withhold her ships bctore undertaking this campaign which strike down ' neutral as well as belligerent vessels? |
