Show Cannery Adds New Product As Canning Season Continues Last week the local plant of the Pleasant Grove Canning Co. packed 4,000 cases of "Stewed Tomatoes." This is a new product pro-duct as far as the company is concerned; but other Utah canneries can-neries have packed a , limited quantity recently. To make stewed tomatoes the tomatoes are peeled and placed in 303 cans. Salt, sugar syrup, onions, celery and peppers are added and the cans are sealed and processed under pressure. "All the housewife needs to do is to open the can, heat and serve," said manager Wesley Jense. He went on to say that if food products sell rapidly these days they must be of the almost "instant" "in-stant" variety. "Modern housewives house-wives just can't be bothered," he said. A few years ago there was a strong demand for canned pump kin. The P.G. plant used to pack thousands of cases each year. For some reason the demand de-mand tapered off. Housrwives apparently did not like to mix in the eggs, milk, sugar and spices to make the pie. Some cannors thought they had the problem licked by adding all the makins' before they canned the pumpkin. This worked for a-while a-while and then the demand stopped stop-ped again. Housewives said they didn't like to bother to make the crust, since frozen piunpkin pies, crust, filling and all were so easy to pick up at the mipsr-markM.. No fuss, no work, no bother. "To date," said Manager Jense, "nobody has been able to produce pro-duce "Instant Chili Sauce" that tastes like the old fashioned kettle-brewed variety." But, who knows what the future will bring, he added. |
