Show Talk on Green Tomatoes and Peas Scheduled David F. Smith, State Commls-i Commls-i sioner of Agriculture, will be at the jcity hall to-night, (Friday, January j 12th,) at 7:30 p. m. to speak to the business men and farmers of this community. Commissioner Smith will speak particularly on the subject sub-ject of growing and packing of green tomatoes and peas. Other speakers at the meeting will be j Leonard Fenn, Federal 'and State? inspector of grades; also West Jacobs, sales manager of the Utah Fruit & Vegetable Association. During the past year, 1933, Utah shipped approximately 300 cars ofi green tomatoes. Of this amount,! ,Utah County shipped 81 carloads,: 35 from Pleasant Grove and 46 from Springville. The labor and, expense of packing each car was ' approximately $40.00, which re-j mained in the communities for la-i bor. I Reports recently compiled show that last year from the green tomato to-mato crop alone, Brigham City realized $80,000, being the largest ' shipping point for this crop in the, state. One company shipped 137' cars produced in Brigham City and vicinity. The growers received $40,-, 000 and the laborers for sorting, packing and shipping another $40,-j; 000 from this one crop. Ws, of this community, should be vitally interested in. this new , departure in vegetable production. Those who have grown tomatoes in the past as well as those interested in entering this field in the future and all others interested in any way t are urged to be at the city hall tonight to-night at 7:30 and hear these visiting authorities on this subject.
