Show Wrote "Hail Columbia" The ballad "Hail Columbia" was written by Joseph Hopkinson, son of Francis, who was one of the signers sign-ers of the Declaration of Independence. Independ-ence. Joseph was a jurist, a native of Philadelphia, born November 12, 1770. He died there January 15, 1842. He composed it in the year 1793 tor the benefit of an actor named Fox, after an air entitled "The President's March," which had been written by a German named Teyles. on the occasion of General Washington's Wash-ington's first visit to a theater at New York in 1783. j |
