The Vikes took a 6-- 0 lead early in the second period when Gage Hansen took a screen pass from Ryan Thomas and followed Rick Swift and Nathan Davis 13 yards in for the score. The extra point kick was short. On the following kickoff, West' rambled 78 yards to tie the score. Their extra point hit the upright and was no good. Just before half, Ben Morris used the same blockers on the same screen play to put the Vikes on top 12-- 0 and Jon Kortman kicked the extra point making it 13-- 6 at halftime. Gary Sanderson, who had an outstanding game defensively, re-covered a West fumble in the first half as did Morris. PG found a flaw in the West defense to open the second half and drove 70 yards for another touch-down. Hansen raced the last 24 yards down the east sideline to cross the yards for their fina ?6rand? point run Chadwtck, Sanderson ifc In addition HansenhadaninteSeh fumble PG sophs wiKfe, Thursdayfora4pm'H- - ' ' - " - - - - " J Vts & '' i ' '' " (.. ,' ' '; p,, - " (Hen Montgomery uses a block from Kelly Wilkinson (75) to complete a touchdown pass to Clark Harris in 39-- 0 win over West. Vikings wallop West in season opener By JACK HILL Playing in the shadow of the State Capitol Building, Pleasant Grove rolled to a surprisingly easy 39-- 0 win over West High on Friday afternoon. Prior to the game, Coach Bill Mikelson, who is beginning his third season at PG, said, "I think we can play with them." The team not only "played" with West, the team dominated the Panthers both offensively and de-fensively. On the first play from scrim-mage, junior Glen Montgomery took his first varsity snap, rolled right and passed to Chris Goodwin. The rugged Viking fullback took the ball in stride and rambled 38 yards to the Panther 21 before being knocked out of bounds. Matt Davis gave Goodwin a good "stalk" block on the corner that added 10 yards to the run. Craig Veenker made a great adjustment on the ball thrown into the northwest breeze, turned out-side and out-battle- d the West de-fender for the ball at the goalline. The touchdown made it 12-- 0 as the try for two points came up short. The Vikes recovered a fumble to set up the third score. Two plays lost yards and on third and 23, Goodwin used great blocks by Matt Bulkley, Wyatt Smith and Kelly Wilkinson to get by the line on the draw play. The senior fullback broke a tackle at the 40 and outran the West de-fenders to score. Veenker's kick was good and PG took a 19-- 0 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the second quarter. Justin Humble, playing at in-side linebacker behind tackle Rob-bie Jones, had a great defensive day with 11 solo tackles. Part of Humble's fine play was due to the 26-- Things continued to go poorly for West when a fumbled pitch was picked up by Danny Norman at the 49 yard line and run in for a touch-down. Again Veenker booted the extra point. Donnell Hooley put the final points on the board with a nifty cutback to score from 11 yards out. Hooley set up the touchdown with a 2 7 --yard run. Montgomery was 5 of 13 for 108 yards and two touchdowns. Goodwin had 81 yards on the ground and Hooley had 55. Matt Bulkley looked good at left guard and defensive end and the Viking secondary played very well for the first game. PG will host Springville Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Viking stadium. The Red Devils rolled over Tooele 41-1- 6 in their season opener. . Three plays later, Darreck Despain was in the endzone with a slicing run over rightrtackle to put PG on top 6-- The point after kick was wide. On the next Viking possession, Montgomery again rolled out in front of the Viking bench and lofted the ball downfield. fact th at West double teamed Jones on every play. This allowed Humble to roam behind the line where he seemed to always be around the ball. Clark Harris started the second half scoring with a leaping catch of a 15-ya- pass from Montgomery. Veenker's kick raised the score to LDS region tennis tourney completed Winners of the LDS American Fork region tennis tournament were announced today by Marv Cartwright and Dena Bezzant The tournament was open to all members and in American Fork, Al-pine, Highland, Pleasant Grove, Manila and Cedar Hills.
