However, for the second week in a row, for the sake of several well timed baskets, the league could just as well be in a five-wa- y tie for first place. The Pacers again escaped defeat as they beat the Spirits 36-3- 2 in a hard-playe- d game that didn't see victory until Chad Humble had sunk four straight foul shots in the closing seconds of the game. The four pressure packed points proved to be in difference in these two fine ball teams. Nathan Larson with 10 and Darin Lloyd with. 8 carried the Pacers offensively until Chad took over during the last few seconds. The victory, however, took nothing away from a brilliant effort by Glen Montgomery who, with a game high 16 points, kept the game close for the Spirits. An 18 to 5 first-quart- lead by the Couears and led by Chad Martin's 12 first quarter points proved to be the difference as the Bulls played the Cougars even ball the rest of the game. The 31 points for the Bulls were a season's high for them as they fell, 42 to 31. Chad Martin finished with a game high 20 points followed by Shawn Stevens with 9 to lead the Cougars while the offense of the Bulls was led by Donny Chipman, Craig Veenker and Chris Johnson with 8, 7 and 6 points respectively. The Jazz, coached by LeRoy Maughan, kept on the heels of the undefeated Knicks and Pacers by coming from a 9 all tie at half time to forge to a 37 to 25 victory over the Larry Goodwin coached Suns. The Jazz were led by Justin Jacklin with 10 points and Brian Maughan and Cole Kelly with 8 and 7 points respectively. The Suns offense centered around Clark Harris with 10 points. The LA Lakers and Bostin Celtics have nothing over the Pleasant Grove Jr. Jazz teams with the same names as the Celtics and Lakers played on even terms throughout the game. It was a matter of which team was ahead at the sound of the horn as the lead see-sawe- d back and forth. The Lakers led 17-1- 6 at half time and 29-2- 7 at the third quarter and 39-3- 8 at the buzzer on a shot by Chad Blackhurst with 3 seconds remaining. But, hold on, the game was not over as the Celtics Derek Robinson got off one more shot at the buzzer that hit the rim. Chris and Chad Blackhurst with 10 and 8 points, along with Bruce Robertson with 8 led the Laker team of-fensively. They saw 9 players contribute points to the victory. In this tight of a game, every point counts. Jeff Walker with a game high 15 point and Derek Robinson with 12 led the young Celtic team. What promised to be a showdown of two giants fell a little sh ort as the Buck's Alan Clark got into early foul trouble and had to sit out, while the Knicks then came back from a 10 to 7 deficit to forge ahead by 16 to 11 score at half time. Alan Clark, the big rebounder and scorer for the Bucks, played the second half during hwich time the Bucks played them even ball. Alan Clark and Nathan Tatum with 7 and 6 points respectively, led the balanced at-tack for the Bucks while Kelly Wilkinson with 12 and Danny Hansgen with 8 were the big scorers for the Knicks. The stage is set for the next three weeks with each of the top teams playing each other which should prove to be some exciting basket-ball as this Saturdays headliners see the Bucks against the Pacers and the Lakers trying to derail the undefeated Knicks.
