' He's outlasted three hospitals, five doctors, and who knows how many lab technicians. Since Elroy Nielson of Pleasant Grove was diagnosed a diabetic in 1938, he has been coming to American Fork Hospital once a week to have his blood drawn. When Elroy first began coming to AFH over 45 years ago, the hospital was located in the upper portion of the old Utah Power and Light building. For almost half a century, Elroy has missed these weekly visits very few times. Although he has a new glucometer and could determine his blood sugar levels at home, Elroy still prefers to have his blood drawn by the hospital. He claims he never really caught on to how to use the machine. "Besides," he adds with a familiar twinkle in his eye, "I really enjoy coming over here each week to see the gals," and as an after thought, "the guys too." According to Elroy, "They've always treated me right." Treating the right includes having two lollipops ready for his weekly visits. Every Friday morning, Elroy can usually be found waiting for the lab to open its doors at 7 a.m. While he has his blood drawn and awaits his results, Elroy flirts with the staff and always has a new joke to share. . Elroy is in amazingly good health, and has virtually no problems as a result of his diabetics. His wife Fern, also a diabetic gives him his daily insulin shots. Elroy attributes his success to good health, weekly hospital visits and years of hard work. He worked for a local construction company Elroy Nielsen, left, patiently lets the technician from American Fork Hospital draw his blood as he has done weekly since 1938. until they made him retire at age 72. It is this type of determination, his matter-of-fa- personality, and years of charm which will keep the hospital lab looking forward to his visits and his new jokes for years to come. f " p tree " f d , I VI "- --. ah V - P, J f w--- ! ixjmlL JUaCAM Winn n.iM.t.umTi.t ii .; ;i n 11 in i ni.il mil i jauauaac . P.G. Jr. High students take a break during Spirit Week. Spirits run high at P.G. Jr. High By LUKE LEONARD Pleasant Grove Junior High "students held their annual spirit "week last week. The week was to boost students morale and give them an vacation. Each day was celebrated dif-ferently. The week started out with Blue and White Day to show the school colors. Wednesday was Nerd Day to give students a chance to act and look nerdy. Fifties Day was next. This recalled pleasant memories for many teachers and gave students a chance to participate in a culture before their time. And, to finish the week off, was Sports Day. This day was to remind students of the coming sports and summer break. The response to the Spirit Week was terrific. Most of the students said they enjoyed it. Seventh grader Rick Smith said he hopes they can do it again and his favorite was Nerd Day. Jason Glaizer, also a seventh grader, said he liked the idea of spirit week. He wishes it would last more than one week. The faculty also seemed to enjoy and support the idea of the week. Many of them participated in the dress up. Principal Kent Rowley says he loved the idea. His favorite day was Nerd Day, and he said there was good cooperation from students and no disruption in classroom situations. Jay Walker, health teacher and basketball coach, commented he liked the idea of the different selections. Students and faculty alike en-joyed the week and hope the tradition continues with some different and far out ideas in the future.
