Lynn-Walke-when he attended the Associated General Contractors of Utah annual awards dinner on Jan. 17 at Little America recently. Nudged by his company to attend the dinner, he was named the Superintendant of the year in Heavy Highway Construction. Employed for 23 years with Gibbons and Reed it was an honor to receive the AGC prestigious award from among a group of 1,500 candidates. Each member of the AGC has a vote to select the outstanding Superintendant of Heavy Highway Construction, the Superintendant of Building Construction, the Supply Salesman of the Year and the outstanding It is believed this is the first time a Gibbons and Reed employee has received an award from the AGC. Lynn felt it a special honor knowing the vote was received from among his peers. A native of Pleasant Grove, Lynn is the son of Jess and Elaine Walker. He has been involved in construction all his adult life. He started his career as a laborer in 1963 and later learned the skills of a carpenter. His company paid tribute to him, reporting that because of his basic leadership abilities he advanced to a foreman, superintendant and for the past several years has been the General Superintendant for the company. They praised him for his unique sense of fairness and honesty that is recognized by all who know him. He also has an unusual ability to n ot over-supervi- but to never let a person working for him wonder what is to be done next. He has worked on many projects, large and small. His approach is always the same. He is always dedicated and works as if each finished job is to be a monument to his reputation and memory. J Lynn Walker was given the prestigious award as the Superintendent of the Year in Heavy Highway Con-struction. At the present time Walker is overseeing four jobs in Arizona and two active jobs in Utah. Even though he doesn't enjoy flying, he spends a lot of time in the company plane. The company owns a seven passenger jet prop and employs a full-tim- e pilot and t. Thinking back on his career he stated, "Times have sure changed in that short amount of time but all for the better." It is certainly different to climb on a company plane and then into a beautiful company car complete with radio and telephone equip-ment. He travels to Arizona every other week to see how they are coming and what he can do to help. Gibbons und Reed is involved in all types of heavy construction building roads, bridges and dams. Lynn was working on the canals at Teton when the dam collapsed causing the notorious Idaho flood. In Salt Lake City he was invovled with the routing of the water and cleaning storm drains down 13th South during the Utah flood. One of his most interesting jobs was the 64 million dollar San Juan Chama project where a series of tunnels and dams were constructed under the Continental Divide. Lynn and his wife, Linda lived in nine states before his job brought him back to Utah. They are the parents of five children, two sons and three daughters. They also have three grandchildren. h I J James It. Burton James R. Burton named to BYU alumni post James R. Burton, pieas.
