Viewpoint Zabel injury raises many questions by JACK HILL Just before the Springville game, Viking basketball coach, Keith Allred said, "If we win one of the next three, I'd by happy." The 'next three games' Springville, Provo and Timpview, were all played in a rigorous seven day stretch and the Vikes won two of the three, including a 58-5- 5 win over the number one ranked Provo Bulldogs. Thursday at Timpview, the streak ended but the loss was more than just being on the short end of the 71-6- 3 score. Starting forward, Brett Zabel, dislocated an ankle, an in-jury that held up the game for nearly 15 minutes. But more im-portantly, Zabel, a player who has practiced for hours each day for years, will probably be lost for the season. The injury, to an ankle Zabel had hurt before, may require surgery and if so, the 6 foot 1 inch senior, a player his coach calls, "the most fundamentally correct player we've got," won't be able to play again this season. Against Timpview, the "race horse quick" Thunderbirds, used full court pressure to gain an early lead and held on for the win. "Beating Provo was a big step for our team", said Allred following the Vikes win over the number one ranked Bulldogs. "We beat them at their own game, defense," said Allred. That defense saw Ron Simmons hold Provo's leading scorer, Alan Frampton scoreless for the first 8 minutes of play. During those minutes PG took a 16-1- 3 lead that they increased to 30-2- 3 by halftime. At the end of three quarters PG still was on top by seven poiints, 44-3- Provo, famous as a basketball school, demonstraated why with a furious fourth quarter rally to tie the score at 51 with 2:50 left to play. With 1:45 on the clock, Provo had the ball after taking it away on a steal, but a Provo pass hit an of-ficial and went out of bounds. Bulldog Coach, Craig Drury, was assessed a technical foul for protesting the call, a technical foul he appeared to want. Oblingingly and correctly, the official signaled what the crowd thought were two "T's" on Drury. However only one two-sh-technical foul was awarded and Kerry VanDyke drilled both of them. VanDyke ended the night with a game high 25 points. Brent Larson, who picked up three quick fouls and sat out part of the game, was fouled and Provo called time out to 'ice him'. During the time out, Allred bet Larson "a hamburger if he made the free throws." Larson hit one of the two and seconds later the Viking postman found himself at the line again. This time the 6 foot 4 inch red head made both shots giving PG a 56-5- 3 lead. Greg Bahr took a long pass from Mark Bronson for a breakaway layup to clinch the win. Bahr had 10 points to go with a great defensive game for PG. Provo's Rick Santiago made an unmolested basket at the buzzer for the final score. Frampton scored 20 points in the final three quarters of play to lead the Bulldog attack. Both teams had 23 field goals and PG made 12 of 14 free throws while Provo hit on 9 of 16 from the line. Zabel had 8 rebounds for the Vikes and Larson pulled down seven. PG's undefeated sophomores edged Provo and Timpview to keep their sparkling record intact. Against Provo, Greg Grothe had 17, Derrick Dickerson 13, Craig Hayden and Todd Mosher 7 each and David Flinders 6. The sophs made 16 of 20 free throws in the final quarter to post the win. At Timpview, the sophs won a 62-6- 4 thriller for their seventh straight Region victory. Coach Allred was undecided Friday on how to replace Zabel. Jeff Harris has played well for the junior varsity and he scored 12 points after coming in the Timpview game. However, Harris is a center and hasn't played much at the forward spot. Starting Bronson and moving Simmons to forward is one solution. Allred was also considering bringing up the hustling Dickerson from the sophomore team. ' Tonight, whatever the solution will be must be tried as the Vikes travel to Vernal to start the second half of league play. Uintah upset PG to open Region 8 play in the first week of January. Vikings down defending champs in thrill product of the fast break, which Pleasant Grove worked to per-fection in the first half. The score at halftime was 30-2- 3 Vikings. Pleasant Grove came out for the third quarter running faster than before, and pushed the lead up to 15. But then Frampton took control of the game. Brett Zabell of Pleasant Grove put his team up by 10 with a basket in the final quarter with 5:50 to go, but Frampton 's steal and two jumpers helped close the gap by two points. With 2:50 left, backup center Don Johnson hit a 10 foot jumper to tie the score at 51. Viking f0r Greg Bahr hit from the corner the score was 53-5- but Fran again, met the challenge tying game at 53. Larson then hit om two free throws to make the st 54-5- After Frampton missed front end of a 1 and l, that's w Larson drilled his free throws For the. Pleasant Grove takes on a io Uintah team tonight in Uintah. by ROBERT BEAN It was a night that will live in the minds of Pleasant Grove basketball fans for years to come. The night was one week ago last night, and the game was Pleasant Grove vs. Provo. The score was 54-5- 4 with j ust 23 seconds remaining in the contest. The shooter was Brent Larson, the big Pleasant Grove center. Larson would shoot a pair of free throws after having missed a critical one just moments before. Larson took a deep breath, stepped up and hit both shots to give Pleasant Grove all it needed to whip Provo 58-5- 5 at home. "We showed a lot of poise," said the understated coach, Keith Allred, of the Vikings following the game. They showed a lot of poise after b eing down 16-1- 3 in the first quarter. The "Dawgs" did score 13 in the first, but it wasn't a result of star guard Alan Frampton who was held to 8 first half points by the defense of PGs Ron Simmons. The big story offensively for Pleasant Grove was Kerry Van-Dyk- e who hit his career high of 25 points on 9 field goals and 7 free throws.
