Show Review-Wednesda- y. September 17, 1986 -- Page 10 Viking lady spikers fare well in invitational meet last week By MARY COO.NS Pleasant Grove High School's girl's varsity volleyball team competed in the Mountain Crest High School Invitational this past weekend, starting slow, losing their first three sets on Friday, but then proceeding to bury their opponents in all four sets on Saturday. The invitational in Hyrum in-cluded teams from all over the state. The Vikings started against Spanish Fork, losing lopsided games with scores of 5 and They did, however, beat Spanish in the second game with a score of 15-- 3. Jayleen Walker served a straight nine points in that game, with Erin Measom serving six straight. In their games against Box Elder, the scores and competition became a lot closer, 11-1- 15-- 9 and 13-1- vScoring by all servers on the team became more even, with Kirsten VanDyke making nine straight points in the second game of the set. Some of the toughest competition that P.G. came up against was in the next set of games against the invitational host Mountain Crest. Mountain Crest has a good team, with both strong serves and some excellent offense. The Vikings lost to them, 7-- and Saturday morning saw a new team from Pleasant Grove. The girls seemed to begin to learn how to compete together and began to soundly beat their opponents all day Saturday. In their first game of the day, the girls beat South High School 15-- 3 and 15-- Erin Measom and Angie Anderson were the key servers for the games, with Angie winning the second game and the set with an ace serve. Against Tooele, the Vikings seemed to just get stronger. Jaylene Walker served eight straight points in the second game of the set. Scores in the set were 12-1- 15-1- 2 and 15-- with Erin Meason serving nine straight in the second game. Sky View High School from Smithfield never had a prayer against the Vikings, being soundly beaten 15-- 8 and 15-- 6 in the next set. Scoring was very even by the Vikings, with most of the girls at least making one point each time they served. The girls really im-proved with their offense, spiking some great hits into Sky View's court. In their last match, Pleasant Grove beat West 16-- 6 and 16-1- Hope Smith had some great serves in the second game, along with Trin Card. The girls had to play a tough offense against West, setting up some great spikes by Erin Measom, Kristine Larsen and Angie An-derson. "The whole team received some great practice in this tournament," said Viking Coach Marie Bone. Marie said that she has a young team, with only three returning seniors, but she sees the team .having some great ability to win this season in league play. y """"" - ''7, ' r ) r I , " ' tf' ' ') ..
