Show Review - Wednesday, October 30, 1985 - Page 10 Vikes roll over Payson, head for state playoffs by JACK HILL "Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!" The line made famous by Gomer Pyle best describes the trick Viking Coach Doug Bluth pulled on Payson Friday night. In the battle for third place in Region 8, Bluth, whose teams have become known for their "I" for-mation option attack, unveiled a "split backfield" veer offense that left Payson Coach Dave McKee, shaking his head and the Lions a 27-- 0 loser. The rejuvinaled offense scored four times with Deon Bezzant, Darren Hooley and Kerry VanDyke ripping off big gains outside the tackles. The defense turned in another outstanding effort in posting the shutout. Obviously Payson expected the usual PG 'T' formation with two wide receivers. What they got was a double tight end alignment and a split backfield. "We ran our lone receiver in motion occasionaly just so he wouldn't get cramps in his legs," said a smiling Coach Bluth during the happy bus ride home. PG completed just one pass, a Kevin Ash to Korey Johansson slant pattern in the fourth period. Not throwing the ball became academic and Payson used all three of their first half timeouts in an effort to cnlvp thf rriiKhinc Prnnnd Mime after for a 7-- 0 lead until halftime. ln8'08tplay Payson fumbled on their n following the kick off and " 20 plays, Jacobsen faked Be2 ' kept the ball and then pi& ' VanDyke who raced 15 0 '. around the righth side for the sco f A trick play for the two worked when points Ash, the pitched the ball to Evan Thorn who passed to Hooley in the en? zone. The Viking defense led by Travis Larsen, Dan Phelon Scott Beagley and Vallen Blackburn stopped the Lions on a fourth and f two situation. PG enters the State playoffs Friday against Logan at Logan at 3 p.m. Students may sign up to ride the bus to the game. The cost iwll be $2.50 for the bus plus $2 for the game. Adults must pay $3 for the game. ' O D O that PG was delivering. Using tight end, Brent Larson, as a blocker, Shawn Jacobsen ran the hard drive time after time to first Hooley and then Bezzant. Early in the second quarter, following an exchange of punts, PG drove to the four yard line where Jacobsen faked to Bezzant, kept the ball and dove into the endzone for six points. Sophs win league championship "refrigerator" play, the Vikes gave the ball to "Meat Locker" Jason TAtum on a dive play that had the fans and team smiling as the Vikes' biggest player rumbled into the line. Here are the Viking scores for the year: PG 19, West 6; PG 27, Spanish Fork 7; PG 64, Carbon 8; PG 19, Uintah 0; PG 27, Provo 14; PG 27, Timpview 8; PG 21, Springville 6; PG 42, Payson 6. Total PG 246, opponents 55. "I'm very happy for this team. They worked hard and had a terrific team-oriente- d attitude all year," said Jack Hill, the sophomore of-fensive coach. Hill pointed out that 16 different players scored points during the season, while 10 different players caught passes. Against Payson, PG had 407 yards of offense, while holding the Lions to 88 total yards. The sophs gained 2425 yards to 1027 for their opponents over the season. . Pleasant Grove captured the Region 8 Sophomore Football Championship with a convincing 42-- 6 win over Payson Thursday. The sophs used a rock tough defense, coupled with a bruising ground attack to roll over the Lions. Coming into the final game, Payson had only suffered one defeat, an early season loss to Springville. For PG, the win completed an undefeated season and a perfect 8-- 0 record. Payson was unable to score or even get close against the Ray Fugal coached Viking defense. The Lions' lone touchdown came in the third period when a PG pass was batted and picked off in the flat and returned for a touchdown. Offensively, PG used the hard inside running of fullbacks Justin Johnston (70 yards) and Todd Mosher (81 yards) to control the ball and roll up 320 yards on the ground. The offensive line of Joe Taylor at center, guards Jon Chidester and Devyn Smith and tackles Casey" Cluff and Brett West opened huge On PG's first possession of the third period, PG gained two first downs before the tipped pass was turned into a Payson score. The try for two points failed. Just before halftime, Scott Flinders ran for a short gain but when he was tackled in front of the Viking bench, Flinders suffered a broken collar bone. To that point, Flinders had carried the ball three times for 19 yards and had caught two passes for 23 yards. Marlow Robinson scored twice in the third period on runs of 8 and one yards and the final PG points came when Shawn Chipman passed to John Hanks on a two point try. The ball was tipped but Hanks grabbed the ball in the back of the end zone for the score. PG's second unit played the last minute of the third period and all of the fourth. Chipman passed 50 yards to Homer for a score that was called back on a procedure penalty and Burke Gurr raced for an eight-yar- d gain that brought a big cheer form the PG bench"""" ' "; Like the Chigago Bears with their holes for the running backs all afternoon. Taking the opening kickoff, the Vikes went to the "flea flicker" pass early with Burke Watkins passing to Darren Gilbert for 42 yards to the Lion three yard line. Using a "tackles over" formation that the Lions failed to adjust to all game, Mosher followed Smith, Cluff and West into the end zone for the first score. An attempted extra point kick was foiled, but Dave Flinders alertly made the "fire" call and passed to Scott Flinders for two points to give PG an 8-- 0 lead. After three downs, Payson lined up to punt and Wes Kirkham, a quick defensive tackle, blocked the kick to give PG possession on the Lion 40. Three plays later, Watkins raced 20 yards on an inside reverse for the second Viking touchdown. Johnston's kick was high and down the middle and with 4:02 left in the first quarter the Vikes led 15-- Mosher and Johnston added touchdowns in the second period "arid "Julio Homer kicked an extra point for a 28-- 0 halftime margin. Dane Iorg helps Royals win Dane Iorg of Pleasant Grove came on as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday in the sixth game of the World Series and saved the game for the Kansas City Royals. Dane rapped out a good single with the bases loaded to send in the winning run as the Royals evened the series at three-al- l with the St. Louis Cardinals. Dane was not yet back in town at press time because of celebrations being staged in Kansas City following the Royals 11-- 0 blasting of the Cards Sunday night to win the World Series. Dane was one of the outstanding players as a designated hitter in the 1982 World Series when he was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals team which won the world cham-pionship. Now he has played a key role, three years later, for another Missouri team, the Kansas City Royals, which has won the World Series. Designated hitters are only allowed every other year and this was the year they were not being used. Fortunately, Dane was able to serve his team in the role of pinch hitter where he came through magnificently. The residents of Pleasant Grove congratulate Dane for his excellent performance this year. |
