Jayvees rout Payson Lions with big win The Viking jayvee ended the season with a 30-- 6 victory over the Payson Lions on the Lions' field last Thursday. It was an important victory for the young Vikes because last year when they played them as sophomores they got whipped. The game actually started out to be a replay of last year. The first offensive play for the Vikes, the Lions stripped the ball and recovered the fumble. But the defense came right back and blocked the punt and the VikeS had the ball on the two-yar- d line, whece Vallen Blackburn took it in with three minutes left in the quarter. The two-poi- conversion was good, so the Vikes lead After the Vikes' kickoff, the Lions ran a few plays, then tried a screen pass which Blackburn intercepted. Then Shaun Young threw to Chris Sanger for a 50 yard touchdown pass, and Blackburn carried it over for the two-poi- conversion and the Vikings lead 16-- Payson then took the ball and fumbled. Young then passed to Cory Carter for 30 yards and Blackburn took it in from nine yards out. The two-poi- conversion failed, so the score was 22-- Payson got the ball and fumbled again and the vines were on the move again. The big play was a pass from Young to Todd Simmons for 30 yards. But the drive was stopped on the 20 yard line of Payson. After exchange of punts, the Lions made 60 yards on a' long pass play with Ricky Mayo catching the receiver at the P.G. eight yard line with a minute and half left in the half. The Vikes made a great goal line stand stopping them on one running play and three passes. That ended the first half with the Vikings leading 22-- Vikings took the kickoff but were stopped. As they punted, Payson fumbled the punt with Ryan Bennett recovering the fumble. The Vikes were stopped and punted again, this time Payson fumbled on the first down and the Vikes recovered on the Payson five yard line. It looked like the Vikes would score for sure. They did score twice, but two off-side penalties and a holding penalty found the Lions taking over on the five yard line. Then Payson punted, but the Vikings fumbled the punt back to them. Then the teams exchanged punts and Payson took over on the Payson 15 yard line. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Payson completed a screen pass for an 80 yard touchdown. They missed the two-poi- conversion, so at the start of the fourth quarter the score was 22-- 6 for Pleasant Grove. After the kickoff, the teams ex-changed punts again. Pleasant Grove took over On their own 40 yard line. It w'as important that P.G. offense get going so they went to the ground with Young and Blackburn doing the clutch running and then PG had a 30 yard TD pass from Ash to Singer. Blackburn ran in the two-poi- conversion, so with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, the score was 30-- 6 P.G. Defensively the Vikes were tough again with Simmons and Chris Drake leading the charge. The offense moved the ball as needed. The jayvee ended the season with a 1 record. All those whom par-ticipated can be compliemented on a very successful season. 4 Advertisement for bids ..l Owner: Pleasant Grove City, ."5 South Main, Pleasant Grove, Utah 84062.
