Police cite Halloween safety concerns Pleasant Grove Police Depart-ment issued Halloween safety tips to local residents. When come to your home, greet them at the door. Leave your yard lights on so children can see where they are walking. Remove obstructions from sidewalks, steps, lawns, driveways, etc. so children will not trip and fall. Keep dogs and other pets on leash or confined so they will not startle young children. If you provide homemade treats, be sure they are wrapped in-dividually. If in a package, write your name on it so parents will know where they came from. It is important that parents insure a safe and enjoyable evening for their children. Following are some suggestions that will help insure a safe evening. Children sometimes become careless from excitement. Remind them to be extremely careful of raodways. Try to stay away from busy streets and intersections. Stay on sidewalk when possible. If no sidewalk, walk to the left facing traffic. Never dart from between parked cars. Cross at crosswalks, look both ways before crossing. Be alert for cars that are turning at intersections. Children's costumes should be safe. Clothes that are loose and bulky, shoes that are poorly fitted, and costume accessories can cause accidents. Wigs, if worn, should be non-flammable. Everyday shoes are much better than high heels or costume shoes. Make-u-p is better than masks as masks can sometimes impair the vision of youngsters. Toy weapons should be made of cardboard so as not to injure if fallen on. Reflective strips should be visible on costumes. Insist that treats be brought home for inspection before eating. If you have any suspicions about a par-ticular treat, contact the police department. Fruit should be washed and cut into pieces to make sure nothing has been put inside. Open wrappers that are partially opened and inspect the contents carefully. Unpackaged items such as popcorn and small candies should be discarded. If you do have a question about the safety of the Halloween candy your children bring home, you can call ' the Pleasant Grove Police Department at 785-350- i - . Main, 756-496- 1 J Winter pruning There have been a number of people wondering about pruning their raspberries, grapes and fruit trees this time of year. It is best not to prune anything during the late fall or early winter. Severe damage can occur to plants if they are prunded before a major freeze. For the backyard gardener with Just a few trees and plants to prune, (it would be best to wait until the first part of March to start pruning. The ideal time to prune most trees 'is just before the buds open up. This way, the pruning will heal quickly, since the new growth will start soon. In commercial orchards, it is often necessary to do some pruning during the winter months due to the large number of trees that have to be done. When this is the case, prune the hardier varieties first, such as apples and pears. Should any of your trees have dead, diseased or broken branches on them, they need to be pruned out as soon as possible. If there are limbs on trees that hang over the house, causing potential problems during the winter, they should be cut off before the snow flies. |
