"Forget it, it's out of here!" That's the way Jim Starr, KPGR play by play announcer called Tim Chambers' seventh inning home run. The 'out of here' referred to Chambers two out, bottom of the seventh, 3-- 2 count, dramatic home run against Springville Thursday. That right field shot advanced PG into the State 3-- baseball tourney with a 7-- 6 sweaty palm win over the Red Devils. PG, Region Seven baseball with American Fork, had lost a coin toss to the Cavemen that forced PG into a playoff game with the third place team from Region 8. Springville actually had tied for second with Dixie but they too lost a coin toss and had to travel to play the Vikings. The two teams met on the PG diamond with the winner going to State and the looser packing up the gear until next year. Springville's Gary Miner tripled to start the game and later scored on Chris Child's ground ball out. Chambers tied the game in the bottom of the first after he singled and Scott Walker was intentionally walked. Clark Hill's ground ball up the middle got through to bring Chambers home. In the second, Springville was unable to handle the bunt after Matt Norman drew a base on balls, Don Grothe and Shane Phillips both laid down sacrifice bunts but the Red Devil catcher, Eric Jacobsen failed to throw the ball after pouncing on the first bunt and on the second, his throw was wide of first, pulling the second basem an off the bag. Charlie Baldridge drove in Norman with a sacrifice fly and again Walker was intentionally walked. With the bases loaded, Hill worked freshman Scott Mitchell for a walk to score Grothe and the Vikes led 3-- Miner collected his second hit in a perfect 4-- 4 day to start the Devil third. Jacobsen bounced a 'swinging bunt' down the third base line that was fielded by Grothe but his throw was wide to Walker at first. Miner came home to score but Walker retrieved the ball and threw a strike to Norman at second to get Jacobsen. The out proved to be a big one because the next Springville hitter, Robbie VanDyke, ripped a home run to center that tied the game. After two out, Walker walked in the fourth, this time it wasn't on purpose. Hill singled to left center ; and Jason AUred walked to load the bases. Sophomore Paul Bronson then drilled a double to the deepest part of left field that scored three runs. From that point until Chambers belted his game winning home run, the PG hitters froze at the plate. Six of the last 8 PG outs were strikeouts and 5 of those were the "stand and look at the third strike" variety. That wasn't the only strange thing in the game. In the fifth, Miner tripled again and Child singled to bring him home. However, plate umpire Jim Gilbert, ruled that Miner had taken off his helmut before crossing home plate and called him out. The run was disallowed much to the consternation of the Red Devil team and fans. Angered and fired up by the call, Devil Mark Comer drove in Darrin Guff in the sixth inning and in the seventh Miner got his fourth hit and Child was hit by a pitch. Jacobsen sacrificed the runners to second and third where VanDyke was able to bring them home with a line shot to right. Following a Guff base hit, Branin Neff flew out to center. Walker then made the defensive play of the game, a play that saved two Springville runs. Baldridge made a great play to get to Jay Larson's grounder up the middle but his throw was low. Walker reached high to get the ball on the hop to end the inning. The two Vikes who preceeded Chambers to the plate in the seventh took called third strikes. Chambers worked the count to 3-- 2' after fouling off several Guff pitches. Guff had come on in relief in the sixth and was in almost total control before Chambers belted the game winning home run. Grothe was the winning pitcher for PG with Cluff the looser. Mitchell, Devil starting pitcher, served notice that in the years to come he will be a major factor in Region 8 baseball. The lanky ninth grader should be a very good player. The Devils out hit PG 12 to 8 but the Vikes are in the State Tourney. Their first game was Tuesday ' against West.
