Students learn how Space Shuttle flies, other science experiments Grovecrest students chuckled at . films of astronauts floating around m their capsules, doing pushups with two hands, with one hand and with no hands during an exhibit by Hansen Planetarium's AstroVan. Glenn Taylor performed several simple experiments for the students. He explained that the rockets which launch the rockets for the Space Shuttle are fueled by "quid nitrogen, he showed the students what the fuel, a cryogenic fuel, was like. He showed how a steel strip put in the liquid nitrogen pould be bent and how a ring placed m the gas would shrink so that a j small metal ball could no longer I. pass through the ring. He had a model of the Space Shuttle with its attached rockets. Mr. Taylor showed pictures of the sun with solar flares in evidence, pictures of Mar's surface taken by the Viking exploration craft, and the students saw photos of the lunar landings, Earth from space and the moon vehicle. Students also were able to view an astronaut's suit and helmet. The AstroVan is sponsored by the Hansen Planetarium and visits the state's schools bringing scientific knowledge alxut space and the U.S. space programs to the students. |
