Show Review - Thursday, May 12, 1983 - Page 7 James Watson, Stephen Liddle receive prestigious scholarships Every year BYU gives away only 16 Spencer W. Kimball Scholarships and this year two Pleasant Grove boys have each received one. James Watson, son of Hazen and Sally Watson, and Stephen Liddle, son of Alfred and JoAnn Liddle, are the two outstanding students. This is a four year scholarship which awards $1,000.00 for each semester. Men applying for this scholarship must have a GPA of 3.85, an ACT score of 29, and be a member of the LDS church. People compete from all over the world, and this year we have not one, but two, Spencer W. Kimball Scholarships awarded in p,f iiH"nt-from Pleasant Grove. First they filled out page after page of applications, and when chosen as a finalist, they attended a three day conference for tests and interviews. When asked for comment they were both quick to say that they were glad each other got the scholarship and also they wanted to thank Mr. Tom Gourley for all his support and encouragement. Congratulations Steve and James! We think that's quite an accomplishment, and it's almost unheard of to have two winners from the same school, but after all, we are PGHS! I fr- - & i i,v I ! , i . i JAMES WATSON, left, and Steve Liddle are recipients of prestigious Spencer W. Kimball scholarships. Both students are seniors at Pleasant Grove High School. --h;-. ..; ( '(, ,"'"'' '. Students learn how Space Shuttle flies, other science experiments Grovecrest students chuckled at . films of astronauts floating around m their capsules, doing pushups with two hands, with one hand and with no hands during an exhibit by Hansen Planetarium's AstroVan. Glenn Taylor performed several simple experiments for the students. He explained that the rockets which launch the rockets for the Space Shuttle are fueled by "quid nitrogen, he showed the students what the fuel, a cryogenic fuel, was like. He showed how a steel strip put in the liquid nitrogen pould be bent and how a ring placed m the gas would shrink so that a j small metal ball could no longer I. pass through the ring. He had a model of the Space Shuttle with its attached rockets. Mr. Taylor showed pictures of the sun with solar flares in evidence, pictures of Mar's surface taken by the Viking exploration craft, and the students saw photos of the lunar landings, Earth from space and the moon vehicle. Students also were able to view an astronaut's suit and helmet. The AstroVan is sponsored by the Hansen Planetarium and visits the state's schools bringing scientific knowledge alxut space and the U.S. space programs to the students.
