Show Miners outmuscled in Jordan weigh I if ting tournament Park City High School sent six athletes to compete in the Jordan Invitational Weightlifting Tournament last Thursday at Jordan High School. In the 19-school competition, Park City was the only 1A entry. And although the top Miner result was a sixth place, the Park City contingent was made up of five freshmen and one junior, so all could be back again next year "It was a good opportunity for our kids to gain some experience," ex-perience," said Bob Burns, who handles the Miner weightlifting program. Although the Utah State High School Activities Association doesn't sanction weightlifting as an official sport, Burns said a competition compe-tition is held in mid-May which is generally referred to as the state tournament. This year Burns says he wants to have Park City host the "state championships." The Park City lifters were: Geoff Palmer, Bruce Buckner, Kris Anderson, Tom James, Steve Knudsen, and Victor Clark. Palmer was the only junior. And it was Palmer who had the top Miner performance, perfor-mance, sixth in his weight class in the bench press, lilting lilt-ing 232 pounds. Buckner was the next best, finishing 12th in his class in the squat competition. He lifted 285 pounds. |
