Show Miners dominate opening league soccer game, but lose by Randy Hanskat "We did everything but win." That's how Miner soccer Coach Jesse Schaub saw Park City's first league game last Friday against Rowland Hall. The Miners went down in defeat 3-2, even though they had numerous opportunities to win the game. "It was a nightmare," Schaub said. "We had so many chances to win, but they just wouldn't go in." Schaub said his team led 2-1 2-1 at halftime on two goals by Kory Bell. Rowland Hall scored its goal on a penalty kick after a "hands" call on the Miners. Schaub said the score could've easily been 4-1 4-1 or 5-1 as the Miners had three breakaway oppor-tunities oppor-tunities which they couldn't convert. , In the second half the Miners continued to control the flow of the game, a very physical game, according to Schaub. He said the referees let the game go, without really trying to tone down the rough play. Then with about six minutes left, Rowland Hall tied the score on a fast break. Three minutes later the Miners were penalized for pushing off during a throw-in, throw-in, a call Schaub couldn't understand after watching the refs allow the earlier physical action. On an indirect free kick, at least one offensive player has to touch the ball before it goes in the net for a score to count. Evidently Miner defender Jay Worley didn't understand the call, because when the Rowland Hall player blasted a shot directly direct-ly at the goal, Worley tried to stop it. He got a piece of it, but it trickled into the net. If Worley had simply let the ball go, the goal wouldn't have counted. After that goal put Rowland Hall up 3-2, the Miners charged back down the field on a last chance rush. Schaub said Craig Griffin blasted a screaming shot at the Rowland Hall net, but a save by their goalie prevented the Miners from tying up the game. Schaub said the loss was discouraging for the Miners, especially since his team dominated the play. But he was pleased by the strong showing nonetheless. That first loss put the Miner league record at 0-1, but Tuesday's scheduled 1 game against the Utah School for the Deaf was forfeited for-feited by U.S.D., so the Park City record is now an even 1-1 1-1 in the league. Next week's spring break will now quell any further soccer action until April 27. On that day the opponent will once again be Rowland Hall. |
