Ski Service Center wraps up 1983-84 Michelob Light trophy by Randy Hanskat Yes, it went down to the wire, although the wire may not have been visible through the slushy snow Monday and Tuesday when the final Town Race was held. In many classes the final results were necessary to decide the top spots in the season standings. And through it all, rising above the pall, was the Ski Service Center which, with the help of Town Race Czar Bill Skinner, brought home the overall championship the Michelob Light Trophy. . . The Ski Service - Center " managed to win two of the six team classes to take the crown. Among the individuals, Karri Hays pulled off a coup, placing in two different classes, the Cross Country (1st) and the Pros (2nd). Skinner said about 300 diehards braved the nasty weather Monday and Tuesday to get a final taste of racing for the season. On Monday the Clementine He won, followed by Brad Makoff. But it was Rip Griffith who emerged as top dog on the season with 220 points, easily in first. r For the x-c women it was Lea Turner winning Monday, Mon-day, but Karri Hays had already built a large enough overall lead that she was quite uncatchable for the season. Hays was first with 215, Turner second with 200, and Joan Skinner third with 165. Moving on to the Cs, three new names crept into the " money, led by Gayle Tolle in first. But they couldn't get into the overall standings, as Starla Durbin won, Cathy Stoy finished second, and Dana Johnson third. There were also new names in the men Cs, but the overalls ended up with Dave Norris in first, Bill Gordinier in second and Andrew Bor-din Bor-din in third. The Killer B women went right down to the wire, and a live wire it was. Annaka so. She finished in a tie with Linda Jacobsen for second place on the season behind Jill Merrifield. But Korfanta was granted second because she had won two races compared com-pared to Jacobsen's single victory. For the oldtimer men Dave Brennan had the title wrapped up long ago. He was followed overall by Steve Morgan and Dave Peets. Connie Brandner and Mark Bender made the As equally snoozeable. Brandner Brand-ner had the women locked up about June of last year, while Bender did much the same to the men. They both rubbed it in a bit Tuesday by winning the finale as well. Finally, in the Pro women Jamie Kurlander Peters found herself in a tight contest con-test with Karri Hays because Peters had missed a race earlier in the season. But she beat Hays Tuesday to take the win and the overall Pro title. The Pro men's season title was wrapped up by Victor win gave the Ski Center the overall x-c class title. Adolph's made a valiant run with a time of 275.60 in the final Pro race, but the Ski Service Center was just too fast at 273.70. That gave the Ski Service Center another title. The next mightiest sponsor spon-sor was the Eating Establishment. Estab-lishment. The Double E pounded the B class with a 200 to 135 point victory over the Ski Connection. Then in the C class the Double E tied with Food For Thought with 125 points. But Food For Thought was given the title on the basis of more individual in-dividual victories. The DynastarMarker team won the Vet class with 200 points, followed closely by the Mid Mountain Lodge with 180. Then in the As it was Blazing Saddles, which had clinched the title a couple of weeks ago, with the Stein Eriksen Lodge in second, and Stein Eriksen Sport in third. The two team titles won by the Ski Service Center propelled that crew into the winner's circle for the big one, as well the Michelob Light Trophy, a four-foot hunk of brass and wood. The winning total was 390 points. In second place was the Eating Establishment, the only other team which was even close, with 325 points. The Double E was last year's champ. The members of the two Ski Service Center teams were: (Pro) Bill (Czar) Skinner, Hans Jakobovits, Jonny Jacobs, Karri Hays, and Jamie Kurlander Peters; (Cross country) Karri Hays, Joan Skinner, Carl Dollhausen, Brad Makoff and Dee Wallace. Trophies were handed out at the season-ending bash Tuesday night at the Rusty Nail. See the Scoreboard section for complete results. course was a combination of slushy goop and light tan snow. Dirt tended to stick to the ski bottoms, but no one among the crowd seemed overly worried about it. Then Tuesday the hot shots took their action up to Ladies' GS. There the snow was another slush pile, with some high winds and blowing ice pellets thrown in for added excitement. But Skinner said the suicidal masses weren't thwarted of the 159 enlisted to race on Ladies' GS, over 130 showed up. On Clementine, the cross countriers had a surprise visitor in the form of Victor Roy, who demonstrated he can be reckoned with in more than just the Pro class. Johnson took the final race, and with it won first overall. Then it was Renee Vanos in second overall, followed by Maree Plunkett Those two actually tied with 145 points each, but Vanos was given second place because she had won a race while Plunkett had not. Dan McCaan had already wrapped up the season title in the men Bs, and didn't even bother to race Monday. He was followed overall by Jim Peine in second and Dave Klouzek in third. The hairy run Tuesday on Ladies' GS surely put some more gray into the scalps of the oldtimers the Vets. Karen Korfanta won the final race, and helped her cause dramatically by doing Roy a couple of weeks back, 0 but Duane Hendrickson E made a late charge, winning the last two races decisively. Had he not missed a couple of the early affairs he might have won the class instead of finishing second. In third, overall, was Bill Skinner. The excitement in the team standings was in the cross country and Pro classes. In the Cross Country E it was a heated battle be- I tween the Ski Service Center and Turner Competition I Services. In the Pros it was Adolph's pitted against the Ski Service Center. Both classes were close in the final races. The Ski Service Ser-vice Center's cross country time was 214.68, while Turner Turn-er came in at 216.04. That |
