Peterson, Lawson post fastest times in Knudsen Cup victory by Randy Ilanskat Local racing wizards Andrea An-drea Peterson and Jason Lawson turned in the fastest women's and men's times Saturday at Brighton to lead Park City High School to a victory in the Knudsen Cup competition for high school skiers. Brighton High School finished second. The Miners didn't win it by much, though. Park City's combined time (three men and two women, one run each) was 422.46. Brighton, last year's Knudsen Cup champ, had a time of 423.08. Next in the 13-team competition competi-tion was East (459.81), followed by Olympus (460.65), Cottonwood (466.39) and Judge Memorial Memo-rial (469.11). Bill Kahn, who manages the Park City team, said the Miners could've won more easily had Trevor Thompson not been sick and been able to ski. Park City used the times of Lawson, Rolf Sandberg Sand-berg (another member of the Park City Ski Team), and Matt Burnett for the men's side. Burnett, not an experienced experi-enced racer but a fine recreational skier, according to Kahn, did well enough to ice the Cup. Peterson, who was a member of the P.C. Ski Team before quitting this season, set the pace for the women with a time of 85.65. Lawson' s winning time was 75.85. Other members of the Park City team were Katie Smith, Cammy Potter, David Smith and Thad Rice. Kahn said a win should be a cinch next year again, as all the top racers for the Miners will be returning. Kahn said the Knudsen Cup race has been run for almost four decades by Art Knudsen and the Salt Lake Ski Club. "It has been a very long protest against the High School Activities Association," Associa-tion," Kahn explained. The H.S. Activities Association won't recognize ski racing as an official high school sport. Therefore, the Knudsen Cup is the only high school skiing competition of the year. |
