Show Abandoned mine shaft collapses near Park City A 55 ft.-wide and 1500-ft. deep hole was discovered alongside the Guardsman Pass Road Friday morning. The hole was caused by the collapse of timber supports within the abandoned H 2 Daly Mine shaft. "It is a very dangerous situation," warned Ed Osika of United Park City Mines. "The hole is continually caving and expanding and the sides are very steep. We'd like everyone to stay away from the area." Oskia explained that the shaft has been abandoned since the 1930s and that it had been backfilled on the surface. He theorized that some of the timbers supporting support-ing the backfill might have finally decayed and collapsed. col-lapsed. The surface rights to the area are currently under lease to the Deer Valley Resort. According to Roger Schmidt of Deer Valley, the resort immediately barricaded barri-caded the area and they are currently surrounding the hole with a chain link fence. "It's awesome." said Schmidt.
