Show BMX locals' series is off and riding The first Thursday night locals' BMX race drew 17 participants at the Park City bicycle motocross track last week and Recreation Director Steve Haugen said his department was pleased with the response. . The locals-only series was instituted last week to give Park City youngsters a chance to sharpen their racing skills before facing the more experienced competitors com-petitors who have been dominating the Saturday Park City races. Among the young locals who pedaled to victory last Thursday night was 10-year-old Danny Tebbs. Tebbs ran against a group of 13-year-old beginners because there weren't any other racers his age. Nonetheless, Tebbs pulled ahead on the rugged dirt track and earned earn-ed a first place trophy. Matt O'Connor placed first in the 7-8 year old moto. He was closely followed by Jay Newcomb, who was appearing in his first BMX race. Park City's regular rad racers John Cowher (1st), Josh Kordecki (2nd) and Chad Ahrendt (3rd) led the nine-year-old field and Alex Hogle won the 15-year-old category. Jeremy Nobis, one of Park City's hard-core BMXers, took an impressive fall but surprised the spectators spec-tators by recovering in time to race in his second moto. "We were very happy with the way it went," said Haugen. "And if we continue to get a response from the local kids we will keep the Thursday series going." Haugen added that the Park City Municipal Corporation Cor-poration had decided to take over the responsibility of running the Saturday race series. |
