Show State Parks team takes three-man tourney by Randy Hanskat It's old hat for these guvs. They come from behind, but never feel any pressure. You might call them the Comeback Kids, although the word "kids" is a bit of a misnomer. Yes, the State Parks team came from the losers bracket once again to win last Thursday night's three-man basketball tournament. The scene brought back memories of July 4 and the first annual three-man tourney, as the State Parks team lost early, but came back through the loser's bracket to take it all. To these guys "sudden death" is just so many words. Only six teams made it to the Treasure Mountain Middle School last Thursday for the event. Each man forked out $5 to play. It didn't take long for the State Parks team to bite it. The group of Courtland Nelson, Bob Hosenyager, Kevin Tuck, and Steve Carpenter went down in flames in its first game to the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. That team was made up of Tim King, Kelly Mutcher, and Scott Poly-chronis, Poly-chronis, but no one was sure just which part of the name each player represented. That loss put the State Parks into the loser's bracket, where another loss would expel the team from the double elimination tournament. No problem, they said, and came back to win two straight games to advance to the finals. No problem in the finals either, as State Parks came back to bounce Cofer Chiropractic twice in a row. The Cofer lineup, made up of Don Cofer, Keith Cooley and Gary Cauforic, reached the finals without losing a game. But the first loss to Cofer made both teams even at one loss apiece. Mike Osher of the Park City Recreation Department, organizer of the toumey, said it was then decided to play only a single game to decide the three-man title, seeing how tired each team was. That final game turned into a blowout for the Parks 15-4 (the first team to 15 baskets was the winner). The State Parks team was so impressive that it received a scholarship of sorts from the recreation department. The rec. department has decided to sponsor the Parks crew in this year's men's b-ball league.-' ' " |
