Show Art's Hardware building to be replaced by a copy of itself?-. The owner of the building which housed Art's Hardware may soon receive a permit to tear down the turn-of-the-century Main Street structure and the residence behind it. But in its place the owner would be required to build a reproduction of the structure. Project architect John Carbine said that was the result of a meeting with the city last week in which "we agreed to agree." Carbine said he met with the building's new owner, Jody Bernolfo, along with City Planning Director Bill Ligety and staff planner Alison Child. Carbine said the developer plans to present detailed plans to the historic district commission and formally ask for a demolition permit. The building, at 551 Main Street, housed Main Furniture and Hardware Hard-ware for more than 50 years until it closed at the end of November. A recent inspection by Ron Ivie, Park City chief building official, indicated there was little chance the existing structure could be restored. Carbine said the new building would not be an exact reproduction. He said additional windows would be added to the upper floor to upgrade the building. The windows will be in the long, narrow style customary in Main Street buildings of that time. W hen asked what historic style the building represented, Carbine said, "Ugly." In a more serious vein, he continued, "You could call it maybe ' 'vernacular.' They just built it." He said the residential building attached to Art's, facing west on to Park Avenue, will also be demolished de-molished but not reproduced. He said Bernolfo's project will combine shops, office space and residential units. (Four units will face Park Avenue, three will face Main on an upper floor.) Originally, Carbine said, Bernolfo intended to demolish the buildings and begin new construction in spring. But it is possible he may use the building for a while, Carbine said. Planner Child told the Record the city may ask for a plaque on the new building declaring that it is a reconstruction. |
