Pillinger beat the elements, along with all the other women, to win Friday. Hayes said the weather was miserable, with high winds and heavy snowfall. The low visibility, coupled with an extremely steep hill, caused many racers to leave the course, Hayes said. After her first run, Pillinger stood in second run, Hayes said, Pillinger "creamed" Livran for the win. In second was Ann Melander of Sweden, a University of Colorado racer, followed by Brenda Buglione, also of C.U. livran was fourth. Saturday's weather was clear and cold, Hayes said, with good visibility. On that day Pillinger was in fourth place after her first whirl down the hill. Hayes said she was having a really fine second run, and was a good bet to move up into the top three places, until she reached the bottom of the course. There Pillinger made a mistake which cost her "about two seconds." That mistake sealed Pillinger in fourth place, about two and a half seconds off of the pace set by Melander, the i race winner. In second was Beth Madsen of C.U., followed by Shari Ahola of the University of Wyoming. Hayes said Pillinger's results were very "impressive." They should be a good confidence builder just before she hits the Europa Cup. Unfortunately, the three Park City ' men didn't have the same success at Winter Park. Hayes said all three fell on Friday. On Saturday Lawson and Shay fell again, and Mitchell finished far back in the pack. U.S. Ski Team men grabbed the top two spots both days. Friday it was Mark Tache in first and Jack Miller in second. Saturday John Buxman nabbed first, followed by Tache. In third both days was Nils Eriksson of Sweden. Tori Pillinger by Randy Hanskat In the Elbert Cup races at Winter Park, Colorado last weekend, Tori Pillinger, Park City's local racing phenom, showed her stuff to a very competitive field, winning one of the slalom races and finishing fourth in the other. The two races were Pillinger's last tuneup before heading off to the big time of the Europa Cup circuit. She leaves for Europe on Jan. 3. And if her performance in Winter Park was any indication, 1985 could be a very rosy year for Pillinger. Alan Hayes, the competition chairman for the Intermountain Division, said the field competing in the A-JI (ages 16 and up) races was of high quality. In the field were 15 U.S. Ski Team racers (both B and C team members), along with college racers from all over the West. The Park City contingent which made the trip to Winter Park with Hayes was composed of Pillinger, Jason Lawson, Scott Mitchell, and Russell Shay. Thursday was a day of training, followed by races on Friday |
