Show Kicks win one, lose two in busy week by Randy llanskat Three games in four days. Does that sound like a lot to you? Well, it does to the members of the Silver Kicks, Park City's women's sorcer team. They had to play that many games in that many days this past week, and wound up winning one and losing two. The frenzied schedule of last week was caused by numerous postponements postpone-ments due to this fall's foul weather. Fortunately, the Kicks have only one game remaining in the fall portion of this year's soccer league season. The week's first game was last Wednesday night, Halloween night. That scary evening in Bountiful the Kicks went up against the Salt Lake Griffin (formerly the Strikers). The game was the Kicks' first Utah Cup game. The Cup is a double elimination tournament which runs throughout the regular league season. For the Kicks it is now only a single elimination affair, as they lost 4-1 to the Griffin. Kathy Benner, goalie of the Kicks, said the team played shorthanded, "as usual." Some of the team's key players couldn't make the game, so the Kicks were forced to play with 10, having no one available for substitution. substi-tution. The Griffin, in contrast, had four substitutes on the sidelines. Benner said the Griffin simply wore down the Kicks. Julie Pappas scored the lone Park City goal. The next night, Thursday, it was back on the field for the local booters, this time to face the University of Utah "B" team in Salt Lake. Against the second U of U team the Kicks were able to win their first game of the season 5-3. "We decided to just go out and have fun," Benner said. "We weren't so uptight." Benner said Cindy Fish scored two of the five goals, while Roxanne Toly, Diane Glaser and Julie Pappas each added one. That win ended a long drought for the Kicks in league play. The team has been close in many games this season, but couldn't get that first win. Thursday's tally put the team's league record at 1-5. The loss column swelled to sue, however, Saturday at Rosewood Park in Salt Lake as the Kicks fell to a crushing Pan World team by the abusive score of 12-0. "That was a whole different ball game," Benner said. Not that Benner remembers much about the game. About 10 minutes into it, she was booted in the head by one of the Pan World players while going for a ball. She received a concussion and had to be taken to Salt Lake in an ambulance. Benner said the kick in the right temple and jaw made for a five-hour stay in the hospital while tests were run on her head and neck. The accident shook up Benner. "That really scared me," she said. "I'll probably never play goalie again." Cindy Fish took over the goal duties, but couldn't prevent a final score of 12-0. Cheryl Johnson of the Kicks said the team's sorry play was a result of "too many games in too few days." The final game of this half of the Kick's season will be Saturday in Rosewood Park in Salt Lake against the Pepsi Express at 9:30 a.m. |
