Show Mrs. Kearns Dies in SLC 1 Mrs. Margaret F. Kearns, widow of Edmund J. Kearns and the daughter-in-law of the late Senator Thomas Kearns, died peacefully in her sleep at her Salt Lake City apartment early Monday Mon-day morning, Dec. 6, 1982. Her husband, Edmund J. Kearns, who died in 1935, was vice-president of the Kearns Corporation, the predecessor company of the Tribune Corporation, the owner and publisher of the Salt Lake Tribune, her father, Senator Kearns died in 1918. Mrs. Kearns, age 85, enjoyed excellent health and remained active throughout her later years. She returned Sunday night from a visit to Tempe, Arizona where she participated in events related to the Fiesta Basketball Tournament as a member of the University of Utah's President's Club. She was born in Salt Lake City on Sept. 25, 1897, daughter of the late Charles Henry and Mary St. Clair Jenkinson. . She was educated in Salt.. Lake City public schools, including includ-ing the old Salt Lake High School. She was one of the first graduates of East High School and then she attended the University of Utah. She and Edmund Kearns, the eldest son of Sen. Kearns, were married in 1918. They had two sons, Francis B. Kearns and Edmund J. Kearns, Jr.jboth preceded their mother in death. Margaret Kearns was a past president of the Catholic Women's League and was an organizer of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary of both Holy Cross and the Veteran's Hospital in Salt Lake City. She was active in Catholic Church affairs throughout her life and was a member of the Cathedral of the Madeleine Parish in Salt Lake City at the time of her death. She was a most generous benefactor of many community commu-nity and social service: organizations in her beloved state. . She was also the much-loved matriarch of a . legendary family, an unassuming unas-suming lady of great integrity inte-grity and character, possessed possess-ed of a marvelous sense of humor, great caring and affection for her faith, family and friends. Mrs. Kearns is survived by: two grandchildren Patricia Louise Kearns, James Patrick Pat-rick Kearns, and their mother, Mrs. Francis B. (Loretta) Kearns, all of Irvine, California. She is also survived by her devoted companion and family member, mem-ber, Mrs. Margaret F. "Peggy" Fitzpatrick of Salt Lake City. |
