Pioneer spirit... and spirits in general, were the order of the day Sunday, when Park City turned out in force to welcome ASTA Convention-; eers. After what was rumored rumor-ed to be a liquid lunch; the Wild Bunch showed up on Main Street around 2:00. Led by ametuer cowboy Cap. Bob Powers, 8 throwbacks (and -possibly wetbacks) of the Old West rode their horses uptown. Although unarmed in the traditional sense, they packed enough private label (early vintage) ammunition to do in any varmit.. One of "the Bunch' complained of the conspicuous lack of hitching posts on Main Street. Speculation ran high that retaliation would be the removal, bulb by bulb of the lights on the Holiday ' Inn's urn. . .er. . .(what was it David called that structure?)... tower? There was no such, immediate action.. .And so, the Wild Bunch was last seen riding off into and through the Sunn set. They were last seen- trying to teach their horses to doe-say-doe. Another "Wild One" Sunday Sun-day was Park City visitors and ponvention chief Jack Douglas; Armed with a pair of long handled shears. Jack proved a quick draw, cutting ASTA visitors ties to ribbons. rib-bons. Apparently they had been warned, the West is no place for a tie. and Jack kept order, snipping those out- laws who had ignored the warning. So sorry, to the out of state visitor whose $25.00 Pierre Cardin tie fell victim to the blades. But the West here is ruled with an iron hand, or at least for Sunday with iron shears. ) Luckily even Governor Matheson remembered Park City's unwritten law. And the Governor went on to speak tieless at ASTA's opening banquet Sunday night. ASTA, along with some sort of spirit (or was it spirits) was on the lips of locals as well this week. The T-Shirt slogan became, "You bet your sweet ASTA I was in Park City." And local actor and director (et all) Don Gomes was overheard to ask... "If they serve spagetti this week will it be called ASTA PASTA?" There was even talk of a special ASTA MASS (high, of course) but it never evolved. (Pity too, I know a little white church that would have been perfect for it.) The West Rides Again, and Park City proves once more, that it has more comic characters per capita than Disney Studios. It's a town whose modern day claim jumpers (clain to be related to Butch Cassidy, claim to have lived here more than two years, claim to..J an be easily forgiven. ..Strike a Vein?. ..The ASTA people were heard to say over and over how impressed they were with the town's friendly people... It's always been our best asset... Bank on it... vJaie; The West Rides Again!! This week's theme for the . ASTA Convention could well become the catch phrase of Park City. Old frontier, stock and spirit were my impressions of Lincoln Ure, the Father who presided Saturday over : the wedding of Patricia Lee Mazzoni and Mike McComb. The wedding was held in the tiny white Episcipal Church on Park Avenue that has just been recently restored. I asked Lincoln about the church here and when the first Episcipalians settled in both Park City and in Utah. He replied, "Traditionally, the Episcipalians came last. There's a saying; The Baptists walked, The Methodists rode a horse; . The Lutherans took a stage, V And the Episcipalians waited for the train." He went on to explain that Utah was the exception to the rule. Here the Episcipalians Episcipal-ians came shortly after; the Mormons. In fact, in 1872, they established the Pioneer r Intermountain West Hospi- , tal, the first hospital between the Mississippi and the - Pacific Coast. The hospital 'served mainly ..miners; some of Park City's first bacholer ; miners were a group of ; Episcipalians. The church in Park City was originally built in 1895. Although the building build-ing was entirely destroyed in . the fire of 1898, the cross ; that now sits on the alter was saved from that beginning church. Lincoln Ure has the destinction of being related, to every other Ure in Utah. i His grandfather ran-a mer-cantile mer-cantile wagon and traveled . all over Utah -and" the surrounding states. Today, ; Lincoln Ure, along with one social worker, sees the needs of the 300 bed hospital that was established back in V 1872. It's now called St. :l Pauls. Father Ure and two other priests initiated the re-birth of the Episcipal church here in Park City. He shares a : third -of - the duties with f," Frazier Crooker, head of the ;5 Alcohol Rehabilitation Pro-;.; Pro-;.; gram at the Utah State ri Prison. The other third of the responsibilities are shared :H with Quentin Kolb, who is a X i Ute Indian. . . Park , City has .
