Show No Grand Jury In Singer Case Third District Court Judges last week did not find enough evidence to justify holding a grand jury investigation investi-gation into the shooting death of John Singer. Mr. Singer was shot and killed January 18 by a law enforcement officer not far from his Marion home. A group from Salt Lake filed in Coalville recently a request to have a grand jury investigate Mr. Singer's death. The Civil Rights division of the U.S. Department of Justice decided not long ago that there was not sufficient evidence to warrant a grand jury; however a department spokeman did say that should new evidence in the case, be presented, the department would consider re-opening it for further examination. Meanwhile, Vickie Singer, John Singer's first wife, is continuing her legal action against Summit County and state officials with a $5.6 million civil suit. Mrs. Singer told the Record during a previous interview that since her husband was killed, she has been barraged with phone calls and letters from people all over the country wanting to know exactly what happened on January 18th. She added she hoped the law suit would result in getting all of the facts out in the open. As John Singer was returning from his mailbox January 18 at approximately 12:30 p.m., walking down Refrigerator Lane towards his house in Marion, he was encircled by five snow mobiles carrying ten Summit "fCounty and state law enforcement en-forcement officers armed with shotguns and pistols. Mr. Singer allegedly drew his -380 Colt Automatic and began waving it at the officers until at one point, according to assistant Summit Sum-mit County Attorney Terry Christiansen. Singer pointed the loaded pistol directly at one of the officers who fired his shotgun killing Mr. Singer. Vickie Singer told the Record that one of her daughters was peering through the living room window of her house with binoculars at the time of the shooting, and saw Mr. Singer running towards the house when suddenly his mouth flew open and he fell to the ground. And Harald Singer, John Singer's brother, bro-ther, said he saw photographs photo-graphs of his dead brother which clearly indicate he was shot in the back. According to Salt Lake . Medical Examiner's report, John Singer was shot in the right part of the back. Two pellets entered his heart chamber. |
