Show Detour Hazards Concerned with the welfare of Park City's youngsters, well known community activist Wayne Putman appeared at Thursday's City Council Meeting with a petition instigated by himself and signed hundreds of Parkites requesting that speed bumps be installed on the roadway through the city park. Mr. Putman said that the Park Avenue detour which channels north-bound traffic through the City Park has posed a danger to young children because of increased traffic and speeders. Wayne said that he had been forced, earlier in the week, to veer off the road and into a fence to avoid hitting a youngster who ran in front of his vehicle while he traveled down the Park Road. Mayor Jack Green said, "I can see nothing but good in this petition," and the entire Council thanked Wayne Putman for his concern. They not only agreed to install the speed bumps but also to change the detour to the other side of Park Avenue when it becomes possible. City Manager Wayne Matthews said that the detour is necessary to facilitate the installation of a sewer line from 13th to 15th Streets on Park Avenue. He said that although the sewer line should be in by the end of May, crews will begin installing water lines along Park Avenue from 8th to 15th Streets shortly after which will mean some form of a detour being in effect on portions of the street for most of the summer. Matthews also said that crews will resume paving the City Streets sometime this week which will mean more inconvenience for locals. However, the benefits of the water and street projects begun last summer will in the long run far outweigh any temporary hardships. |
