Show FIRE THREATENS TOWN OF TAFT SPOKANE. Wash.. Aug. 12. Taft, Idaho, the little town in the Coenr l'Alene district, with its 200 residences, resi-dences, may bo swept off the map as the result of forest fires, which are now raging in the hills surrounding the hamlet. The flames are now eating eat-ing their way down the memntain bides, and it Is feared that the concerted con-certed efforts of a force of fire fighters fight-ers canuot save the place. Should a strong wind come up, Wallace, Wal-lace, too. would be in imminent danger dan-ger of being wiped out. Seventy-five men arrived at wallacc this morning from Spokane, and with the twenty-five twenty-five mustered in there have left for the Placer Creek section, where the ilames arc raging the fiercest. Wallace is enveloped in a cloud of dense smoke, and burning moss, pine cones and needles are dropping on l ho buildings and residences, keeping tne people here on guard day and night to prevent the structures catch-ing catch-ing fire. Although no Tamllies have left either Mullnn or Wallace as yet, a large part of the population is making mak-ing ready, nnd some of the moro tlmi -' ones are preparing to depart with their belongings at a moment's notice. |
