Show SUICIDE OF RICHARD SLATER LIFELESS BODY IS FOUND HANGING HANG-ING FROM RAFTER. Act of Slatervllle Pioneer Is Attributed Attrib-uted to Worry and Mel-ancholia. Mel-ancholia. The residents of Slatervllle wero surprised and shocked yesterday morning to lenrn of the suicide of Richard Slater, one 'of the founders of the town. Mr. Slater, w'.io was in his sixtieth year, ended his lifo by hanging himself from a window win-dow of nn outhouse of his residence. The' deceased, who is said to have been demented for the past five or six years, yesterday worked about his home and after doing the .chores, which he was accustomed to perform each morning, walked down to one of his fields and securing a rope about five feet long, returned to an outhouse which, has been used recently as a blacksmith shop, -to make elaborate preparations for his death. He climbed the ladder-like stairway of the building, made a clear space near the window, and, making a nooso of the short rope, placed it about his neck and after fastening' the other end firmly to the rafters of the barn Hung himself into space. His neck was not broken, strange to say, but he waB strangled to death as his weight tightened the noose about his neck. His body was not discovered until about 11:30 a. m., when his son wrent to the barn to secure a shovel. Sheriff Wilson was Immediately notified noti-fied and the body was brought to Ogden to be placed in Rlchey's undertaking un-dertaking parlors. Mr. Slater is survived by two daughters, daugh-ters, two sons, two brothers and six sisters. He was well to-do and had been a prominent resident of Slater-ville Slater-ville since 1S52, when he crossed tho plains with a party of pioneers. He had apparently been in a dementei state since his former wife, Mrs. Walter Wal-ter Clark of West Ogden, secured a divorce from him about five years ago. The man had lived alone with hts children since, but ho worried over the divorce case to such an" extent that his suicide, it is believed, is the result. The death of the pioneer was considered con-sidered by the local officials as a sure case of suicide and it is believed that no inquest will be held. |
