Show WOMAN IS JAILED ON CHARCE OF VACRANCY On a technical charge of "vagrancy," "va-grancy," a woman of the underworld, giving her name as "Marie Smith," was last night locked in the city prison. The woman, who is of uncertain uncer-tain age and showing plainly the signs of wear, accosted a city detective on lower Twenty-fifth street. Tlie sleuth took the woman under his protection and preferred the vagrancy va-grancy charge against her. Marie told several conflicting stories sto-ries of the circumstances of her meeting meet-ing with the detective, but as she was known to the officials there was little credence placed in her jam. The detective did not make known his Identity to the woman and she claimed he was an old acquaintance of hers of whom she was about to borrow bor-row a dollar with which to securo some food. She claimed to be from Idaho and after being questioned closely by the police as to the cities she lsited in that state declared she had spent some lime in Winnemucca, Caiiln, Mon-tello Mon-tello and several other smaller towns along the line of the Southern Pacific. When searched by tho officers she produced a lonesome silver dollar and a bag of ropular tobacco used for the manufacturing of cigarettes. She was willing to part with tho money, but requested piteously that tho smokes be allowed her during the night Sergeant Ternes assigned her an apartment for the night and the woman wom-an disappeared from view behind the strong doors of the city prison. |
