Show OFF FOR PANAMA. President-Elect Taft, accompanied by engineers, has departed for Panama, Pana-ma, to inspect the canal. This is not the first trip of Mr. Taft to the Canal zone as it is one of several visits he has made in an effort to obtain at first hand knowledge of the work of building the big canal. There have been rumors of engineering engi-neering blunders and misappropriation of funds.' There is always a possibility possibil-ity of such rumors having some truth back ot them, and although Mr. Taft may be convinced everytnins is above criticism, ho goes to reassure himself there is nothing wrong, either in the engineering plans or the control of the working forces. - The present administration has watched the progress of work on the canal with untiring vigilance and the President himself has been on the ground, inspecting tho big machines In Culcbra cut and gathering information informa-tion from both engineers and laborers. But regardless of all these painstaking pains-taking safeguards and this careful supervising, sup-ervising, the rc&ndal-mongers have assailed as-sailed the administration. Certain it is, men of small calibre hope to gain prominence ly attacking thoso high in authority and they care not whether their accusations are based on fact or are pure libels. |
