Show GREATEST PASSENGER RATE WAR IN HISTORY SCHEDULED. Salt Lake City, May 19. A pasen-ger pasen-ger rate war, in extent the greatest in the history of the railroad world, ic scheduled to occur this summer, according ac-cording to eastern and local rumors. The contest for business Is to he made on eastern traffic, directly affecting the business to Portland and to tho exposition at Seattle. The roads said to be chiefly concerned in the rate war are the Union Pacific, Burlington Burling-ton and Rock Island lines, Including possibly the enver and Rio Grande. While these rumors could not be confirmed in local railroad circles, there seems to be some ground for the impending battle for passenger I business in the recent adoption of new I time schedules by all the roads Involved, In-volved, and by the placing of extra trains in service for tho purpose of handling eastern passenger traffic. Heretofore the Burlington. Union Pacific Pa-cific and the Rock Island have main tafned two trains daily between Chicago Chi-cago and Denver, these continuing on to Salt Lake via the Union Pacific and the Denver and Rio Grande. Now the roads are to install a third train between these points, while as a mat-" ter of fact the business on each does not seem to justify the present two-train two-train service. Of course, the traffic to the exposition will be greatly In excess of the ordinary travel, but the fact that each of these roads is installing in-stalling a third train indicates that they are out for business, each for itself, and no matter what becomes of the hindmost. The cause for the rate struggle Is not clearly given, but it is said to be sort of an outgrowth of the old quarrel quar-rel between the Harrlman and Hill forces over the Portland gateway mat- ter. in which Hill shut Harriman out j of Pugel Sound passenger busiue&s. In line with this theory it is up to the Union Pacific to make 'the first' move, and this will be followed, It is stated, by the Hill roads, and the rate war will be on. Other lines entering this territory' and carrying exposition business will of necessity be concerned con-cerned in the big fight, and the Denver Den-ver and RIo Grande, it would seem, is scheduled to line up with tho Hill forces against Harriman, vheioas t,he Rock Island and Chicago and Northwestern North-western probobly will be in lino with the Harriman forces in the fray. A local feature entering into the general lineup of opposition between the roads develops in the fact that uinifi uif new i line scnenuie Del ween this city and Ogden the Oregon Short Line train arriving from the Junction city does not arrive here until late in the afternoon, v.hllo' the Overland limited on the Union Pacific- gets Into Ogden at 121 Thus the train under the new Denver and RIo Grando schedule sched-ule which leaves Ogden at 1:05 p, ni. is entitled, according to a well informed in-formed local official, to cany the mail t from the Overland limited, making the delay in distributing mail matter which might be otherwise caused ouly a matter of len minutes. It Is strongly hinted thai a revision of the revised Short Line time table will be made within the Immediate future. Involving perhaps tho whole running schedule of the local service between Salt Lake and Oxden. The' mall frorn.the west, according to the same official, now gets into Cgdn over tho fast train at 3:30 p m ..leaving Ogden for Salt Lake at 1:55, arrives in Salt Lake at 1:55 with Sau Francisco mall.
