Show WRONG MAN ON CHAIN SANG FELLOW WHO WAS NOT SENTENCED SENTEN-CED IS PUNISHED. Middle-Aged German, Awaiting Trial, Is Sent Out With the Cemetery Ceme-tery Gravel Pit. Gang. An odd incident occurred at the city bastile this morning, an untried prisoner pris-oner being put to work on the rock pile. Gabriel Zweisler, a middle-aged German Ger-man who pleaded not guilty Wednesday Wednes-day to a charge of drunkenness, was to have been disposed of today. The gentleman was not to be found, however, how-ever, and a subsequent investigation of the matter revOled tthe fact that be had been hustled away with the chiin gang earlier In the day and was at that time probably doing a shift in the vicinity of the City cemetery. Zweisler is unable to speak English , fluently and, when questioned by the jailer as to what his sentence had been, the latter understood him to say ten days instead of not guilty. Before further explanations could be oblaineJ, the unfortunate victim of his own ignorance was assisted into the waiting patrol wagon anil carried car-ried to the scene of labor with the regular chain gang. He will be presented for trial Friday Fri-day and credit for tho day's work will probably be given him. |
