Show STEAMER MONGOLIAN CAUGHT IN DANGEROUS ICE FLOE i " - SL Johns, N. F., May 19. The Allan Al-lan liner steamer Mongolian, bound from Glascow and Liverpool for St. Johns. N. F , Halifax. N. S., and Philadelphia Phil-adelphia with five hundred passengers passeng-ers on board, was caught in a dangerous danger-ous ice jam one mile off this harbor late today, and tonight was in a hazardous haz-ardous position. It was feared that If the wind Increased In-creased before daylight the Mongolian Mongol-ian would be driven ashore and become be-come a total wreck. In the event of an accident it Is thought the passengers pass-engers could escapo by walking over the densely packed ice floes. Just returned from the ico paqked waters of Belle Isle sfraR, where she had been abandoned by her crew and later lat-er rescued, the coast steamer Pros-pera Pros-pera also lies wedged In the ice between be-tween the Mongolian and tho shore. Tho Prospera was sent out to tako off tho passengers and malls of the Mongolian, but bad just passed the harbor mouth when the ice barrier became impregnable and further headway was impossible. |
