Grand Junction, Colo., May 20. As a result of a battle between sheep men and cowboys on a contested range near Atchee, Colo., yesterday, 3,000 head of sneep were killed and two sheepmen were injured, but none seriously. The sheep, which belonged to Taylor Brothers of Montrose, were grazing on a range near the hamlet of Carblnero. According to the reports received here, the cowboys dashed in upon the herders and tied them to trees and then rode out among the sheep, killing kill-ing them. The slaughter of the sheep reuired almost an entire day. In order or-der to prevent the news leaking out, the cowboys first cut the telephone wires and then made their escape in the hills. Several hours later the sheep herders were discovered and liberated. The authorities' of Garfield county have been notified, but owing to the fact that the district in which the sheep slaughter took place is in a desolate des-olate portion of western Colorado, It Is not regarded as probable that the cowboys will be captured. The range In which the crime was committed has long been a contested range, and several murders have resulted re-sulted from uarreis over it. |
