Twenty or more persons were injured, some of thera. seriously by dropping from secomj story windows in a fire starting from a gas explosion, which destroyed tho Toledo flats, Sixty-fifth street anJ Minerva avenue, here today. Tho property was damaged to the extent of 75,000. The first explosion occurred in the basement, and was followed by others In various parts of the building. Flames burst forth In several quarters and halls and stairways. stair-ways. The occupants of the flat on the second sec-ond floor rushed to a window, one woman holding her year old baby In her arms. Screaming and leaning far out of tho window, she dropped her boy, who fell safely into a dozen up-stretched up-stretched arms. Mrs. Udegraff herself then climbed out, aud after hanging to the rail, dropped. She was sei iously Injured. Mrs. A. Elmore., also a tenant, was Injured badly by jumping from a second-story window. John Miller, Janitor of the building, and Mrs. Catherine Carmody. a tenant, ten-ant, were severely burned, Mrs. Carmody Car-mody and an elderly woman, whose name could not be learned, jumped from a second-story window, l The explosions blew out nearly ev-l ev-l cry window, in the building and the entire building was soon a mass of flames. ' Ambulances were sent to the scene from 3 different poli.ee stations and Ibe injured hurried to hospitals. j |
