The caso of Hr.nry Johnson, tho full-blooded In-djan, In-djan, who Is serving a seven-year term In the Utah state prison on a charge which it is declared ho is innocent of. vill be brought before the board of pardons at their meeting today. Johnson John-son was sentenced from Vernal, after pleading guilt to having criminally assaulted as-saulted a young girl while under tho influence of liquor. Later It developed develop-ed that Johnson did not assault the giil and was not intoxicated at the time It was claimed he was. This bit of evidence was brought out at tho trial of a civil war veteran named Ten-bioeck, Ten-bioeck, who was charged with selling Johnson the liquor, which, it was claimed, had made him drunk, the testimony tes-timony coming voluntarily from tho girl herself. Johnson pleaded guilty, It is claimed, claim-ed, through Intimidation on the part of the officers who arrested him, ho being told that If he pleaded guilty ho would be let off with a light sentence. sen-tence. Knowing no better, Johnson did as he was told, and instead of being be-ing given the light term promised was sentenced to seven years In state prison pris-on at hard labor, and is still confined there. It is expected that the board will grant him a completo pardon at today's to-day's meeting, and that he will be Immediately releusod and allowed to return to Fort Duchesne at once. |
