Show STATEHOOD BILL MAY NOT BE COHERED THIS IS LEARNED BY DELEGATIONS DELEGA-TIONS FROM TERRITORIES. Senate Leaders Have Practically Decided De-cided Not to Permit Bill to Past at This Session. Washington, Jan. 16. Numerous delegations from New Mexico and Arl-zone, Arl-zone, which have come here to press the claims of thess territories for statehood, have learned that the senate sen-ate leaders do not intend to permit the statehood bill to pass at the present pres-ent session. This decision has been leached at an informal conference of tlie senate leaders. It was said that there was not time enough remaining of this congress to enact the necessary legislation. Statehood State-hood measures Invariably provoke prolonged pro-longed discussion. A.n additional reason, rea-son, adopted by senate leaders against the proposition, is the fact that members, mem-bers, who have discussed the qualifications qualifi-cations of these territories, differ widely as to the character of the population pop-ulation and Its ability to carry the responsibility of statehood. It is aald that there are a number of questions to be settled which will be answered by the coming decennial census, and many members of congress therefore urge that statehood be delayed until after It has been taken. Many other members, including Senator Foraker. who has been an advocate of separate statehood for them for a number of years, have pointed out, with some force, that the platforms of both of the great political parties declare for statehood for both territories. How-over, How-over, there are only forty legislative davs remaining, and practically all of the big supply bills are yet to be I passed. |
