Show PERU DEPOSES HER PRESIDENT President Pardo in Prison and Provisional President Proclaimed Pro-claimed in Few Hours. PARDO TO BE TRIED Fourth of July Is Proclaimed National Holiday by Former Executive. LIMA, Peru Friday. July 4. (By the Associated Press) Augusto B. Leguia late today assumed office as provisional provis-ional president of Peru and took up his residence in the government palace as a result of the successful overthrow over-throw earlier in the day of President Pardo. Senor Pardo, his minister, and a number of his officials of the army and navy are in prison. Virtually no fighting and no casualties marked the overthrow of the Pardo government Te revolution began at 3 o'clock this morning with an attack on the palace by two regiments of troops and a police force. By six o'clock President Pres-ident Pardo bad been deposed and Sen-j or Leguia proclaimed provisional president pres-ident It was announced late today that President Pardo would be placed on trial on charges of having violated the constitution and of having conspired against the institutions of the republic. repub-lic. Thousands of persons thronged the streets lodaj cheering for Senor Leguia. A crowd assembled j before the government palace and called on Leguia for a speech. The provisional president, speaking from the balcony of the palace, dc- j dared tha' hi intended to organize a strong government on a popular basis, and to increase the army and navy to the status they had held during his previous term as president from 1908 to 1912. He said he would defend the principles of justice and right which had triumphed in the prea'. war and would associate Peru without reserve with the cause of the allies He intended, in-tended, he said, to extend every facility facil-ity tor the introduction of foreign capital cap-ital .to aid in the development ot national na-tional resources. Senor Leguia in a statement to the Associated Press said he had made every effort to avoid deposing President Pres-ident Pardo by force but it had become be-come increasingly evident that a conspiracy con-spiracy was afoot to deprive him of the office to which he had bon chosen in the recent election. There are no reports from the provinces pro-vinces concerning the situation then, but Senor Leguia and his associates expect no difficulties in th-it quarter The provisional president expects to announce his cabinet within a few hours. |
