Show 'BULLETS TO PIERCE 1 ARMOR OF PLANES WASHINGTON, March 4. Modern aerial warfare has brought forth a now kind of ammunition. The war department depart-ment last night announced the de- I velopment of special cartridges containing con-taining bullets for armor piercing, tracing and incendiary purposes. j Tests have shown that this class of , cartridges produced by the United I States perform fully equal to and in some cases surpass those developed abroad, it was stated. Armor piercing bullets became necessary- when the more vital parts of airplanes wore protected with light armor. A bullet containing an inflammable inflam-mable substance, ignited upon discharge dis-charge and, carrying the spark or flame into the tnnk upon piercing it, was found especially desirable in view of the fact that gasoline tanks are particularly par-ticularly susceptible to incendiary explosion. ex-plosion. As an enemy machino was within fighting range for only brief moments at a lime and there were means of determining the effect of the firing, as on land, a tracer bullet containing bright burning composition, which would indicate, the path of the bullet in daylight, as well as in darkness and thereby allow the aim of the machine guu to be corrected, was introduced. Combinations of armor piercing and tracer and armor piercing and incendiary incen-diary bullets have been made. |
