The Turpln Ranger station on the Teton national forest, with headquarters head-quarters at Jackson, Wyo., was recently recent-ly broken into by a man who was trying try-ing to hide in the mountains in order I that his questibnnaire would not reach him. The ranger, however, with the assistance of a forest guard and dep-1 uty sheriff apprehended the man and , turned him over to a United States marshal. Trying to hide In the mountains on a slim supply of grub is not an easy matter, so this thief found out in his sad experience. However, supplies are often to be located at tho ranger stations sta-tions on the national forests. On his way down Buffalo Creek, he passed the Turpln Ranger station where the rangers ran-gers had a good supply of food for the winter. Mr. Thief, finding no one in possession of the station and feeling feel-ing the pangs of hunger gnawing at his stomach, removed a pane of glass from one of tho windows, slipped the catch, climbed in, and helped himself. The day he broke into the station the first time, ho was seen going down the canyon, and it was thought that he would soon return. Consequently, the supply of provisions that wero left were marked In such a way as to be easily identified should they be taken and the man caught. Ranger Rosen-crans, Rosen-crans, Guard Smith, and Deputy Sheriff Sher-iff McDougall left town about midnight and arrived at the station early in the morning juat in time to see Mr. Thief leaving the station with a good-sized pack on- his back. They overtook him before ho had gone 100 yardB, and in the pack they found several cans of soup and jam which had been marked. When they entored the station they found several other cans tho contents of which he had emptied. A good flro mado from a rail taken from tho station fence, was iun uuiuiiis m ins siove. Mr. Thief was put under arrest by the deputy sheriff and taken before the United States, commissioner at Jackson Jack-son where he pleaded guilty and was bound over to tho next term of courL In the meantlmo, however, It was loarned that ho had registered under tho selective draft act at Lusk, Wyo., and appeared to be-In hiding so that his questionnaire would not reach him. The authorities of Niobrara county were notified, and they replied that ! the man was wanted in that county and that a Deputy U. S. marshal would be sent to get him. Tho man was taken to Kemmerer to wait the marshal's mar-shal's arrival. Whatever Is done with him, it Is not likely that he will break 'into any more ranker stations in the near future. It is moro likely that he will have an opportunity to break into the kaiser's mansion. |
